Theatre Hotel Courage is an international theatre company under the artistic leadership of Katrien van Beurden. The company creates contemporary shows based the Commedia dell’ Arte ( the first professional theatre actors in history) famous for its portrayal of archetypes with masks and places them in a contemporary setting. Hotel Courage explores this theatrical style in today’s society - with and without masks - to create a tragic-comic-poetic experience that is both vivid and alive.
As an ensemble, top Dutch musicians and composers will create an expressive paradise of sound with a combination of modernistic soundscapes, traditional folk music, classical structures and electronica using voice, saxophone, harp, piano, percussion and electronics.
Theatre Hotel Courage has toured Canada, the United States, Palestine, Ghana and India and is well-known for its training of professional actors, directors and filmmakers. Their educative outreach extends far and wide, from the likes of the University of Toronto to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, in both Los Angeles and in New York.
A room with a view
In November 2017, Theatre Hotel Courage will perform ‘A Room With A View’. With each country they visit, they pose the question: ‘If the world were a hotel, what would your place in it be?’. The Americans responded with: “We are in the conference room, and from there we rule the world”, while the Palestinians said: “We live in the basement of the hotel, without daylight, and no-one should see us” and the Iranian view was: ‘We are not allowed to go into the hotel, we must drop off the food at the door for the guests.‘ Katrien and her troupe challenge these stereotypes in ‘A Room with a View’. Stay tuned for tour dates near you.
Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime

A music theater installation about medically induced coma dream
Claudia Hansen - concept, composition, text, percussion, voice, video animations, stage design
Silence, sound, light, motion photography, darkness, video animations, overwhelmingness and emptiness reconstruct the state of medically induced coma – the dreams and feelings.
I am very lucky that I have never been in medically induced coma myself. However and unfortunately, too many people around me have been so. They have told their stories – their dreams – and these stories struck me. They struck me because they were the answer to all the questions I had when I stood in front of the hospital bed. There are no answers.
Eerie Days is a metaphorical performance that gives an impression of how medically induced coma is experienced – a state of mind. It gives an idea how a person’s perception is altered through strong drugs, and how different and difficult the perception of a daily situation can become for someone who is imprisoned in a body that cannot move or communicate but whose brain nevertheless keeps perceiving the outside world.
The audience’s experience of this performance hopefully sheds some light on the mysteries of coma – a state where any human communication becomes impossible. Because it can happen anytime.
